Oilgae - Glossary

Butanol Fuel - Definition, Glossary, Details - Oilgae

Butanol may be used as a fuel in an internal combustion engine. Because its longer hydrocarbon chain causes it to be fairly nonpolar, it is more similar to gasoline than is ethanol. Butanol has been demonstrated to work in some vehicles designed for use with gasoline without any modification. It can be produced from biomass (as "biobutanol") as well as fossil fuels (as "petrobutanol"); both biobutanol and petrobutanol have the same chemical properties. WikipediaLinks

Butanol fuel - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - This article is about Butanol from biomass used as a fuel. For other alcohols used as fuels, see Alcohol fuel.

Butanol: The Next Generation Bio-Fuel - what is butanol? When speaking of it as a bio-fuel, it is an alchol based fuel that, at 85% strength, can be used without any changes to many engines, unlike ethanol. Butanol fuel is produced from fermentation of biomass. Essentially rotting bio-materials can be converted into butanol.

Butanol - An Energy Alternative? - Butanol is a 4-carbon alcohol. Other chemicals in the alcohol family include methanol (1-carbon), ethanol (2-carbon), and propanol (3-carbon). Today butanol is typically produced from petroleum sources, but that has not always been the case. During the first half of the 20th century, the production of butanol from biological sources was a commercial reality - and this is what today’s butanol supporters are hoping can happen again.

Butanol or butyl alcohol is an alcohol with a 4 carbon structure. Butanol is primarily used as a solvent, as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Butanol may be used as a fuel in an internal combustion engine. It is in several ways more similar to gasoline than ethanol is. Butanol has been demonstrated to work in some vehicles designed for use with gasoline without any modification. It can be produced from biomass as well as fossil fuels. Some call this biofuel biobutanol to reflect its origin, although it has the same chemical properties as butanol produced from petroleum - Source
