Using algae for wastewater treatment offers some interesting advantages over conventional wastewater treatment. The advantages of algae-based treatment include:

  1. Cost effective treatment
  2. Low energy requirement
  3. Reduction in sludge formation and
  4. Production of algal biomass

Algae can be used to treat both municipal and industrial wastewater. Algae play a major role in aerobic treatment of waste in the secondary treatment process. Algae - based municipal wastewater treatment systems are mainly used for nutrient removal (removal of nitrogen and phosphorous).

Algae have the ability to accumulate the heavy metals and thereby remove toxic compounds from the wastewater. In some cases, algae also play a role in the removal of pathogens in the tertiary treatment stage.

Commercial technologies and processes for algae based wastewater treatment systems are already available in the market. A system such as the Advanced Integrated Wastewater Pond Systems (AIWPS) technology was commercialized by Oswald (1991) and Green, (1996) in the United States.

On Nov 2009, Wastewater Grown Algae to Bio-crude Oil Demonstration Project was announced. The aim of the project is to produce between 150 and 300 tonnes of algae per year from the 5 hectares of wastewater treatment High Rate Algal Ponds. (Source: Science alert)
