Biodiesel - will an alien tree deliver? - Introducing an alien species into the environment, even if it could potentially contribute to
rural employment and poverty alleviation
and an alternative source of bio-fuel, is not an easy consideration. The
social, economic and environmental implications need to be well understood.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the potential for South
Africa to 'grow' its own energy in the form of a bio-diesel producing tree.

Topic: Bottom of the Pyramid Case Study: Biodiesel in South Africa; Principal Investigators: Antoine Dumit, MIT Sloan School of Business; Rob Hadley, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Time frame: June 1, 2006 to August 10th, 2006. Read their brief report here (PDF)
South Africa considers biofuel
for renewable energy - 9 January 2007 - Source: SciDev.Net - The South
African cabinet has approved an ambitious biofuels industrial strategy,
announced the Department of Minerals and Energy this week (8 January). It is
hoped that the draft biofuels plan will meet 75 per cent of the country's
renewable energy target, in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol on climate
change. Read the full

The debate on a
subsidy for South Africa’s biofuels in the context of WTO multilateral
arrangements; Author: Fundira, Taku; Published: 03/10/2006 - Taku
Fundira, a tralac researcher, discusses South Africa's intentions to provide
incentives to stimulate and subsidise the emergence of a local bio-ethanol
industry.
De Beers Fuel gets SA's first
commercial biodiesel licence - 21 Jul 06 - The South African Revenue Service
has licenced De Beers Fuel's first commercial biodiesel production plant,
making the company the first licensed commercial biodiesel producer in South
Africa. The pilot production plant in Naboomspruit, Limpopo, has the capacity
to produce 3,6-million litres of diesel a month, using sunflower-seed oil.

Biodiesel
in South Africa - South Africa's soya production would have to quadruple
if the country was to meet the demand that would be created if Sasol decided
to build its first soya bean-to-diesel plant, it emerged yesterday.
South
Africa considers biofuel for renewable energy - The South African cabinet
has approved an ambitious biofuels industrial strategy that will meet 75 per
cent of the country's renewable energy target, in compliance with the Kyoto
Protocol on climate change.
Emission-to-biofuel technology comes to SA - A newly formed biofuels company in South Africa has secured the rights to use a system that recycles CO2 in flue gases into clean, renewable biofuels.

Prospects for Biodiesel in
South Africa - Following enquiries from potential international investors
regarding prospects for bio-diesel in 'developing' countries, Parallax has
investigated the situation in South Africa. Parallax has particular interest
in this area since it seems that the best geographical prospects for
bio-diesel in South Africa are in KwaZulu Natal, the province in which Switch
On Energy Services (the local Section 21 company established by Parallax)
operates. Recent developments with regard to the field of biofuels in South
Africa have shown that the Government is very keen to encourage greater
activity in this sector.
Future of Biodiesel in SA - They can be produced in any climate using already developed agricultural techniques. Renewable means that something comes back after it is used. Vegetable oil is an example of a renewable fuel. When you use vegetable oil as a fuel, more crops will grow and more vegetable oil will be produced.

About Oilgae - Oilgae - Oil & Biodiesel from Algae
has a focus on biodiesel production from algae while also discussing
alternative energy in general. Algae present an exciting possibility as a
feedstock for biodiesel, and when you realise that oil was originally
formed from algae - among others - you think "Hey! Why not oil
again from algae!"
To facilitate exploration of oil production from algae as well as exploration
of other alternative energy avenues, Oilgae provides web links, directory,
and related resources for algae-based biofuels / biodiesel along with inputs
on new inventions, discoveries & breakthroughs in other alternative
energy domains such as Solar Wind nuclear, hydro, Geothermal hydrogen
& fuel cells, gravitational, geothemal, human-powered, ocean & Wave /
Tidal energy.
