Jatropha in Africa - Fighting the Desert & Creating
Wealth - by Keith Parsons, August, 2005 - Jatropha isn't a well known
biofuel, like corn or sugar cane, but when it comes to producing bio-diesel,
Jatropha may be have the highest energy payback of any biofuel. Moreover,
unlike corn or sugar cane, Jatropha is a perennial, yielding oil seed for
decades after planting, and it can grow without irrigation in arid conditions
where corn and sugar cane could never thrive. Read the full report from here

Africa to become the world's biodiesel supplier? - Posted
Mar 2007 by Dane Muldoon, Autoblog Green - The new kid on the biodiesel
feedstock block, Jatropha oil, is gaining widespread acceptance as a more
environmentally friendly and less economically volatile route to a widespread
biodiesel future. Jatropha's popularity is seeing money being pumped into
African agriculture for biodiesel production. The long-living plant is being
viewed as the spark that can revive the African economy, says this article.

Green Star Products has announced that it has signed an agreement
with De Beers Fuel Limited of South Africa to build 90 biodiesel reactors.
Each of the biodiesel reactors will be capable of producing 10 million
gallons of biodiesel each year for a total production capacity of 900,000,000
gallons per year. Read the full

Biofuel: Africa's new oil? - Biofuel holds great promise for Africa but the research isn't yet in place to reap the rewards, or analyse the pitfalls, reports Kimani Chege.
Africa:
Biodiesel Plant - Milestone for Country - The commissioning of Zimbabwe's
first biodiesel plant is a major milestone in the country's efforts to
harness available energy resources and promoting the use of renewable energy
as a long-term strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Africa's
first biodiesel plant - The Zimbabwe Gazette Daily News Online - Giving
the real news dimension than any other newspaper!, Africa's first biodiesel
plant
Biodiesel
in South Africa—Tokara Winery - South Africa is not a country that gets
too much green coverage, but that’s not to say there isn’t plenty of stuff
going on. Previously we’ve mentioned the likes of organic Rooibos Tea,
Malaria monitoring watches, rural and youth
Brazil urges
Africa to join "biofuel revolution" - Speaking during an
African tour; Lula said Brazil's experience with biofuels showed the
environmental and economic benefits of mass producing ethanol and bio-diesel.
Biofuels and
Africa - Africaresource.com is an educational portal that develops and
distributes content. We offer educational materials, academic research and
products on Africa and Diaspora. We publish peer-reviewed journals,
bibliographies, poetry, artworks, stories, art exhibitions, autobiographies,
who's who directory of scholars and innovators, and much more.
NGOs warn
Africa on the dangers of biofuels and genetic engineering in the fight
against Climate Change - A number of NGOs have written an Open letter
(attached below) to the African nation delegates urging them to call for
rejection of large-scale Biofuels or Genetic Modification (GM) technology as
possible ways to achieve fast growth or more efficient fuel conversion under
the Clean Development Mechansism (CDM). They point out that dependence on
Biofuels and GM technology may in fact exacerbate the problems of climate
change, environmental degradation, social inequality and poverty,
particularly in Africa.

About Oilgae - Oilgae - Oil & Biodiesel from Algae
has a focus on biodiesel production from algae while also discussing
alternative energy in general. Algae present an exciting possibility as a
feedstock for biodiesel, and when you realise that oil was originally
formed from algae - among others - you think "Hey! Why not oil
again from algae!"
To facilitate exploration of oil production from algae as well as exploration
of other alternative energy avenues, Oilgae provides web links, directory,
and related resources for algae-based biofuels / biodiesel along with inputs
on new inventions, discoveries & breakthroughs in other alternative
energy domains such as solar, wind, nuclear, hydro, geothermal, hydrogen
& fuel cells, gravitational, geothemal, human-powered, ocean & wave /
tidal energy.
