Sargassum seaweed spotted on Mayaro beaches
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) said confirmed sightings have been made of sargassum on Mayaro beaches.
The ODPM said it received reports of significant quantities of seaweed off the south-eastern coast of Trinidad, mainly on the Mayaro Beach.
Sargassum is a genus of large brown seaweed (a type of algae) that floats in island-like masses.
Sargassum seaweed has a strong odour and insects may be present. However, Sargassum seaweed does not sting or irritate skin, nor is the odour toxic.
