Startup Turns Deadly Algae Blooms into Plastic Alternatives
A startup company Bloom is effectively converting harmful algae blooms to plastic alternatives.
Algae blooms have received serious attention in recent times as overgrowth of these organisms can clog up beaches, lakes, ponds, etc. To control this algae bloom, a startup company has come up with an idea of converting them to plastic alternatives.
With the help of a mobile harvesting unit developed by its parent company Algix, Bloom believes that it can effectively cleanup freshwater algal blooms, clean the water and send it to the waterway. The separated algae can then be dried, pelletized and turned into a high performance flexible foam which can be used in sporting goods, footwear and other applications.
Bloom’s algae foam is also available as a 100% algae-derived antimicrobial formulation (AlgaMetrix), which may help prevent the spread of bacteria and cut down on odors.
The new algae based foam could be a drop-in replacement to conventional foams.
