Two Stages of N-deficient Cultivation Enhance the Lipid Content of Microalga Scenedesmus sp.
Scientists from China have conducted an experiment to enhance the lipid content of the microalgae Scenedesmus sp. 14-3. Two-stage N-deficient cultivation was followed to enhance the accumulation of biomass and lipids of the microalgal species.
The experiment was carried out by growing the microalgal species in an N-deficient medium at low light intensity for 10 days with 20% inoculum concentration and then transferring it to complete N-depletion BG11 for 8 days at high light intensity. The results showed that two-stage N-deficient is more suitable and effective culture method for commercial applications and increase in accumulation of lipids than the two stage process.
