Microalgae- ‘The Superfood’
In spite of being potential biofuel source, Microalgae are one of the most nutritious foods. The simple green organisms made their entry into everything, right from animal feed to baby food. Microalgae are photosynthetic and produce oxygen. Marine algae are responsible for creating half the world’s oxygen. According to Robert Henrikson, CEO of Smart Microfarms at AlgaeIndustryMagazine.com, microalgae are 20 times more productive than conventional crops and require less water. The chief advantage of cultivating Microalgae for corresponding substitutes is that Microalgae do not need fertile land, posing no threat to agriculture.
A very well- known microalga, Spirulina has gained attention of the public, due to its high nutritious value. Spirulina is rich in protein and iron. It was quite earlier when microalgae were put into infant formula for DHA, which is lacking in cattle milk as stated by Milton Sommerfeld, codirector of the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation. Sommerfeld strongly believes that attempts of making algae- as- feed will make its way into use. Usage of algae as livestock has been found to produce sound results in the growth of cattle and chickens and their eggs.
Proponents suggested that the Algae- fed Chickens have lower cholesterol levels and higher healthy carotenoids that give antioxidant properties in their eggs.
Even though algae seem to be a superfood, the problem of production landed algae to be in the specialty market. The researchers and commercial cultivators are making all attempts to reduce the cost of production of algae in order to make superfood affordable price for anyone.
