Algal DHA – A Healthy Food Supplement for Expectant Mothers
-Know more
Expectant mothers are advised to intake algae supplement – instead of deep-sea fish – to obtain DHA for the healthy development of babies. Deep-sea fish is mostly contaminated by heavy metal due to serious marine pollution and hence algae is proposed as an alternative source of DHA. Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid essential for the fetus’ brain and retina development. The suggested amount of DHA intake is 200 milligrams per day. It has also been suggested that the pregnant women should avoid eating shark, swordfish, alfonsino and bluefin tuna as they have high levels of mercury. Source:
