Algae Biofuels-the Fuel Wave of the Future?
Researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology have found a novel way to produce biodiesel, one that doesn’t require massive amounts of equipment or labor to harvest. Used by wastewater treatment plants to get rid of ammonia, nitrates and phosphates, algae have long been a cost-effective way to keep systems running smoothly. This prompted researchers to look into using algae as a source of fuel, replacing diesel fuel by a whopping 50%. The researchers are using Scenedesmus (single-cell algae) to isolate and extract lipids, which in turn makes biodiesel. To date, the group has created 100 gallons of algae, a number they hope to increase tenfold by spring.
