Feeding Cows Diet with 2% Seaweed can eliminate 2-4 Billion Tons of CO2 per Year
Scientists at James Cook University, Australia have found that cows when fed with small amounts of seaweed along with their normal diet of grass could reduce methane emissions by up to 99%.
The researchers tested 20 species of seaweed and found that Asparagopsis taxiformis, a species of red algae effectively reduced cows’ methane emissions by 99% when cows were fed with only 2% of that seaweed.
It is to be noted that a single cow releases between 70 and 120 kg of methane a year. The negative effect on the climate of methane is 23 times higher than the effect of CO2.
