Application of Seaweed as Substrate Additive in Green Roofs: Enhancement of Water Retention and Sorption Capacity
Scientists from India and Singapore conducted an experiment to incorporate a brown seaweed Turb
inaria conoides in green roof growth substrate to enhance the run-off quality from green roofs. The green roof substrate was prepared using perlite, vermiculite, sand, crushed brick, coco peat and 10% of Turbinaria conoides.
The results showed that the green roof substrate had favourable characteristics such as low bulk density, high water holding capacity and hydraulic capacity. In addition, they acted as a sink for various metal ions and produced runoff.
