Algae-Based Shampoo
A Japanese household goods maker has found that the medium chain fatty acid present in one of the algae species can be used as surfactant material in shampoo. The fatty acid structure is found similar to the one present in palm kernel oil, thereby an effective surface-active agent.
As palm kernel oil extracted from palm seeds, have been raising concerns about deforestation, algae can be promising source. Prior to palm kernel oil, petroleum products were being used, while the current focus is on non edible source like algae.
The company’s research on different areas like algae production and extraction of target material, will be finished by 2020, after which algae-based shampoo may be manufactured.
