Chlorella Improves Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients
Researchers from Chlorella Industry Co., Ltd., and Innovative Cancer Therapy of Kureme University, Japan conducted a study on the effects of unicellular green algae Chlorella and its hot water extract supplementation on quality of life (QOL) in patients with breast cancer.
Breast cancer patients were randomly assigned into three groups (with supplementation for a period of one month):
Test food 1 – Chlorella granules
Test food 2 – Chlorella extract drink
Control group showed no positive effect post supplementation. Also, there was no significant difference in the chlorella granule group.
On the other hand, there were significant differences seen in Chlorella extract group, improving the quality of life in patients. The positive effects were reduction of fatigue, improvement of abdominal symptoms, improvements of dry skin, improvement of hair gloss and improvements of cold constitution.
Detrimental effects were reported in the control group and Chlorella granule group, while no such reports were obtained from chlorella extract group. Therefore, it’s safer to use Chlorella hot water extract with breast cancer.
Stress is the major issue of breast cancer patients, and Chlorella helps in managing the psychological distress in them.
Chlorella, which is abundant in lutein, beta-carotene and Vitamin E, has the ability to lower the oxidative stress, modulation of immune responses and enhancing anti-tumour immunity.
Half of the patients who took Chlorella extract have experienced positive effects, showing improvement in their QOL. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
