Marine Algae As Sources of Nutraceuticals and Industrial Products
-Know more
Marine algae is known to product a myraid of natural products, with some containing unique molecular structures, and many of them have been shown to possess a variety of pharmaceutical and nutritional properties. In a project investigated at Rutger’s University, selected species of microalgae, cultured primarily for their use in aquaculture as feedstock for macroorganisms , are examined to determine if they produce medicinal and nutritional natural products. One of the goals of this project is to develop methods and protocols to survey these species for chemical components of medicinal or nutritional interest. Using chromatographic techniques, the algal extracts are fractionated in order to reduce complexity of chemical analysis by HPLC-UV-MS. Using HPLC-UV-MS analysis, compounds contained within the algae species are then identified and as needed in combination with NMR and/or HRMS.
