DOE’s Algae Biofuel Projects – Way to Go!
In an attempt to commercially produce the sustainable algae biofuels within 2022, the US Department of Energy (DOE) has granted $16.5 million to four projects in California, Hawaii, and New Mexico. The projects cover both upstream and downstream processes in the algae production value chain. Details of the algae biofuel projects include:
Project Theme | Grant from DOE | Project Entity |
Developing a cost-effective photosynthetic open pond system to produce algal oil | $5 million | Hawaii Bioenergy |
Developing a new process to produce algae-based fuel that is compatible with existing refineries | $5 million | Sapphire Energy |
Increasing the yield of microalgae, Developing cost effective harvesting and cultivation processes | $5 million | New Mexico State University |
Increasing the productivity of algae strains and compare two separate processing technologies | $1.5 million | California Polytechnic State University |
