Nova Scotia Start-up Wins Clean Tech Competition
Halifax-based start-up SABRTech , has won the Nova Scotia Clean Tech Open, for developing technology to mass produce microalgae for fuel and other products. SABRTech was awarded awarded $100,000 in cash, a $200,000 negotiable seed investment, and in-kind business building services. The company is setting up a lab and working on a micro-algal bioreactor that effectively produces micro-algal biomass at an industrial level. SABRTech’s CEO Mather Carscallen is aiming at the production of algae-based aviation fuels in a large scale and he hopes that the funding will help him in making the dreams a reality.
The company is now working to create a prototype and Carscallen hopes to have a commercial facility in three years. He added, “Our technology marks a new beginning for micro-algal biofuels, one that is not just cheaper or easier to maintain, but that reduces the number of steps needed from actually growing to harvesting the oil.”
