Israeli Scientist to Become Member in NAS Algal Biofuels Committee
National Academy of Sciences has named Prof. Sammy Boussiba of Ben Gurion University of Negev, as a member of the committee it has appointed to examine the sustainable development of algal biofuels. The committee’s findings on development of algal biofuels will be submitted to US authorities and this will help in determining Washington’s policy on this issue and future funding.
Prof. Sammy Boussiba is the director of the French Associates Institute for Agriculture and Biotechnology of Dryland at the Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
Under Br Boussiba’s guidance, the Ben-Gurion University headed a prestigious research venture in the field of water purification and microalgal biotechnology, along with the University of Johannesburg and the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr Boussiba is well known for his research in microalgal biotechnology for the large-scale production of astaxanthin from Haematococcus, physiological aspects which determine the survival of Spirulina in extreme alkaline environments, and so forth.
