Algae-Based Carbon Capture Next to Power Plants at Orissa, India
Algae-based carbon-dioxide capture seems to be an excellent opportunity for industries such as cement industries, iron and steel as well as for companies such as National Aluminum Company(NALCO) which emit enormous amount of carbon-dioxide into the atmosphere.
With the initiative of the Orissa government, a 9.5 million project will be launched to sequester carbon-dioxide from the thermal power plant of NALCO at Angul in Orissa. As per the project, algae will be grown in shallow ponds and carbon dioxide produced from the thermal power plant will be tapped and introduced in the pond. The allocated land area for this project is about half an acre for the project and the algae strains will be brought from Toronto. Little technical details have been mentioned about their algae -based abatement technology.
