Fluid Imaging and Lone Star Biotechnology Collaborates on Algae Research

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Yarmouth, ME – Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc. of Yarmouth, Maine, USA, today announced that it is collaborating with Lone Star Biotechnology Institute, part of the Lone Star Community College in Texas, on the college’s algae-to-biofuel research program. Fluid Imaging is providing a FlowCAM® imaging particle analysis instrument to the institute’s algae research program which will permit them to accurately monitor algae growth in a bioreactor.

The FlowCAM takes hundreds of high-resolution, digital images of individual algae cells in a discrete sample or a continuous flow in seconds, providing data on up to 30 parameters, including count, size, shape, concentration and lipid content. All images and data are then saved for further analysis using proprietary image management software.

According to Fluid Imaging’s CEO, Kent Peterson, the FlowCAM was introduced to the emerging algae-to-biofuel market about two years ago, and has been used for algae photo-bioreactor and open pond performance analysis at other organizations.

Mr. Peterson commented, “The FlowCAM was originally developed for algal analysis, so it is optimally suited to serve in the burgeoning biofuels global market. What’s more, it is rewarding for Fluid Imaging to participate in a collaborative research effort with this kind of forward thinking educational institution that has dedicated resources to pursue an environmentally friendly solution to the growing problem of fossil fuel shortages and excessive carbon emissions.”

Daniel Kainer, Ph.D., Director of Lone Star Biotechnology Institute at Lone Star College added, “The FlowCAM is an impressive instrument, ideally suited for algal research. It will play an essential role in assessing culture conditions to usher in the new algal to biofuel industry.”

Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc. manufactures FlowCAM particle analysis instrumentation for rapid characterization, imaging and monitoring of particles and cells in fluids. The instrument is used in oceanographic research, as well as for monitoring municipal water supplies, food and beverages, pharmaceutical formulations, biofuels, chemicals, plastics and other industrial applications.
