Abstract:
A method for cultivating algae can include providing a body of water in a substantially enclosed system. The enclosed system can have a length of channel and a cover. The method can optionally include circulating the body of water through the enclosed system under positive pressure conditions. The positive pressure should prevent ingress of any external atmosphere or material. Further, the method can include cultivating the algae in the body of water at conditions which promote growth. Likewise, a system for cultivating algae can include a channel with a cover, water in the channel, and a pump to introduce positive pressure into the system.

The present invention provides a tissue culture method for cultivation of marine algae, said method comprising the steps of (i) establishing axenic viable algal material by sequential treatment thereof in sterile sea water supplemented with domestic liquid detergent, incubating the treated material, (ii) culturing the axenic explants on agarified medium for induction of callus; (iii) excising and subculturing the calli from the axenic explants on fresh agar plates to obtain differentiated densely pigmented oval or spherical shaped micro-propagules (iv) subculturing the pigmented calli in agarified medium to achieve enhanced somatic embryogenesis and micro-propagule formation in pigmented filamentous callus, (v) transferring the filamentous calli with somatic embryos for morphogenesis and development of young plantlets; and (vi) cultivating algal biomass on a large scale by growing the young plantlets in enclosed perforated polythene bags.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to algae cultivation systems and methods. In an embodiment, an algae cultivation system is included. The algae cultivation system can include a cultivation tank, a plurality of light transmitting elements configured to be at least partially submerged in a liquid medium disposed within the cultivation tank, wherein the light transmitting elements increase the effective surface area of the liquid medium exposed to light, and a plurality of gas injectors configured to emit gas into the liquid medium. In an embodiment a method of culturing algae is included. The method can include measuring the amount of carbon dioxide in a cultivation system and modulating the amount of light being supplied to the cultivation system based on the measured amount of carbon dioxide.
