microstraining is a popular method in water treatment, employed to remove the algae.... can i use a similar microstrainer for algae harvesting?

Micro straining can be used for algae harvesting. It is one of the simple and cost effective methods used for harvesting microalgae. Mainly cross flow microstainers are preferred...The only problem is the clogging of pores due to algal settling.
Ithink you can use it but make sure you adjust the influent flow rate and microstrainer rpm accordingly...

Hi,
Thank for the info..
U have any idea what is the typical flow rate for harvesting using microstainers? Also the rotation per minute?
Flow rate is between 50-70 gpm andt rpm is about 10 - 20 rpm.
Backwash your instrument after every harvest..

Do you know the pore size of the microstrainer for microalgae?

Its better to use microstainer with 5 micrometer pore size for microalgae like scenedesmus and chlorella. For Filamentous microalgae like spirullina, pore size of 25 micron is normally used.

I am not sure whether these microstrainers can be applied for large scale harvesting. From the data I read in this thread it looks like it can give only small amounts of biomass for a setup; in addition, I am not sure how easy it is to use continuous processes for microstraining

I actually want to try it for open pond of 75m2... it is only batch culture...
Will there be any problem in using microstrainer?

The Solar Energy Research Institute report on Design and Analysis of ' Microalgal Open Pond Systems for the Purpose of
Producing Fuels" have considered microstraining for harvesting.
You can check out that :

Hi, does anyone know the rough cost price for a micro-strainer with its capacity ? or is there a website that i can look up for ?
thank you very much.
