PetroSun claims that it can grow its own oil in the desert cheaper than it can pump crude out of oil wells and BioFields said that it plans to produce ethanol using saltwater, in the Sonoran Desert of Mexico. I think GreenFuel Technologies also has its algae pond in Arizona.

How exactly do these companies operating algae farms in deserts plan to get their water? Ground water from great depths, while available, might be really a costly resource...

Any thoughts

An interesting research is underway in BISR - Birla Institute of Scientific Research in Jaipur, situated in the desert state of Rajasthan. Led by well-renowned scientists and with international collaborations, this premier Indian institute seems to be well on the road to setting up a plant for algal biodiesel production and CO2 sequestration. For those who want to know more about the research - http://www.oilgae.com/blog/2010/10/alga ... -bisr.html. For those highly interested souls, there is a detailed version of an interview with one of the institute's scientists - Dr. Krishna Mohan which can be found at - http://www.oilgae.com/blog/2010/10/2533.html
