OP in OS!

This topic encourages discussion on the use of Open ponds (OP) in the domain of OS (Open source - algae). I believe open ponds are the right way to cultivate algae. But it is no easy task to cultivate algae at scale in open ponds. Agreed, scientists have tried small scale tanks and have published exceedingly nice results. But when algae is grown in thousands of square meters, it is often difficult to control various parameters and induce the desired level of growth. Some genetic engineering may help here, but again the sustainability of the process is debatable. Is there a simple way to enhance the biomass growth of the cultures? Can we understand the algae life-cycle completely and in minute detail so that we can motivate it by giving certain periodic triggers to multiply faster? (here is an interesting article on these lines - http://www.oilgae.com/blog/2010/10/the- ... racer.html )
