Seasonal variation of algae chemical composition

Seasonal variation of algae chemical composition

I came across an interesting paper that discusses the differences in chemical composition for algae (macroalgae) grown in summer and in winter. It is interesting to note that the energy content of macroalgae grown in winter is higher than that in the summer.

I am not sure if this will be the case for many other macroalgae ( the experiment was conducted on specific macroalgae species in Aus), but this is quite interesting and also encouraging, because it was generally felt that in winters algae production and productivity might be lower owing to less sunlight.

Another interesting point to note is that the carb content is much higher in all the species tested, with the lipid values rather low - not exactly surprising news!
