marine phytoplankton CCMP647 has 50% oil yield?

Postby cacofonix » Sat Jan 24, 2009 10:52 pm

"CCMP647 is a marine phytoplankton that has high oil content - about 50% of mass. This strain is readily available from CCMP, a US culture collection organization.

It can grow up to 50 % lipid. It doubles in about 2-3 days. Initial field trials have been few with this strain, but some of the trials appear to suggest that this strain can outcompete other invaders."

This is from a post at Oilgae Blog.

I'd like to know more about this. Many people seem to consider it their favorite. Yet I do not see any major company using this - at least they have not revealed they are using this strain.

Any inputs on this strain will be most appreciated

Hi,
I have read an abstract on " Culturing Coccolithophorid Algae for Carbon Dioxide Bioremediation" They studied the
mass cultivation of Pleurochrysis carterae CCMP647 in number of photobioreactors and outdoor raceway ponds.Total lipid content of the cells ranged between 30-50% of total dry weight.

Mak,

Thanks for the point...

Do you know of any company that is using this strain?
