Top Indian Companies Exploring Algae 6

The recent news articles on algae fuels clearly indicate the increase in interest among the top companies, especially the oil companies, for algae fuels. Some big companies? names are getting added up every month in the list of companies exploring algae. Indian companies such as Reliance and Indian Oil Corporation are showing significant amount of interest towards algae fuels.

Reliance Industries being India?s largest private sector company, Reliance Petroleum is eyeing opportunities for multi-billion dollar investments in Alberta's oil sands. On the other hand, Reliance Industries Limited is in its initial stages of planning to conduct a feasibility study for algae fuels. M. Ganapati, President, Corporate Planning, Reliance Technology Group, told that the critical research and development objective in this sector should be to promote premium quality fuel from algae at a cost competitive with petrol and diesel.

Another prominent company in recent news is Indian Oil Corporation. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is partnering with UOP LLC, a Honeywell International subsidiary, to produce green transportation fuels from non-food feedstock.

As per the agreement, the partners will explore setting up a bio-fuel production unit at a select IOC site using domestic feedstock and evaluate the viability of pyrolysis oil technology to convert plant biomass into renewable power and heat.

Honeywell's UOP has developed a process technology to produce its algae-based jet fuel under a contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for both military and commercial aircraft.
