Economics Algae

Our  earth only contains a limited amount of fossil fuels, and we are  running out. It is time we start to think about a permanent alternative  to gasoline. There has already been some research in the field of  biofuels, this research started with corn and has been expanding ever  since.

Since the creation of biofuels one has  started to rise up as the best, Algae. It is a higher yield crop that  greatly reduces our environmental impact.

If algae  Biofuel were to be used there would be many economic benefits. The first  and largest benefit of algae based fuel is that it has a much higher  rate of production compared to corn, soy beans or other sources of  biofuel. Another  positive aspect of algae fuel is that it  is much easier to produce; it requires only      water and  carbon dioxide. Both of these reasons mean algae biofuel cheaper to  produce and will yield a higher amount of fuel.

There is also much dispute over using food crops as  a source of biofuel. The use of food crops as a biofuel is that it  leads to an increase in the cost of that food. Once corn began to be  used as a source of fuel its price increased greatly.  This  would not be a problem with algae as it is inedible.

A  possible trade off for using algae is giving up on already started corn  fuel research. There will not be very much algae fuel to start with so  it will be scarce in the beginning. Making algae fuel would require land  to grow the crop and people to tend to it. The technology to convert  algae to fuel would also be necessary. The trade off is that the land  used for algae couldn’t be used for other crops. The cost is that we  will have fewer resources to use on other types of fuel.

Algae  fuel may not be entirely possible on a large scale right now but as  soon as it is we should seize the opportunity. by Matthew Stephens
