Production of high amount of oil from transgenic microalgae

1513\2009 is a code number of Egyptian patent request under the title "a new system for harvesting of algae from water for biodiesel production". This system also performs domestic wastewater treatment.

The system depends on the wild type of bacterial and algal strain that grows in domestic waste water which is a source of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. The system consists of Microbial fuel cell which produces bioelectricity from bacteria, Photobioreactor for cultivation of algae, a harvest unit for collecting the algal biomass and then pressing it for extraction of oil which is further subjected to transesterfication process to get biodiesel.

The goal of my research is to produce transgenic microalgae transformed with hormone gene (insulin) that blocks the lipase gene expression and drives the algal cell to accumulate higher amount of oil. The process proceeds with the preparation of the algal cell with two other genes.

Under the effect of insulin, Inhibition of lipase activity in the transgenic algae will give high accumulation rate of triglyceride in the cell, which may exceed the Oil content of the wild type of Botryococcus braunii.
