Researcher designs solar collector for algae |
|
Keith Klein, a researcher at Sul Ross State University in Alpine,
Texas, is designing a solar collector to distribute light and heat to
grow algae as a biodiesel feedstock. The instrument will include an
insulated algae propagation tank with a parabolic mirror and refractor
to concentrate the plant-feeding part of the light spectrum onto
algae, and the remaining light onto solar cells and a boiler to
produce electricity. The device will enable algae to be grown in
variable climates, he said.
