The biggest effort is to grow a strain of genetically modified algae that excretes petroleum--that is, to grow a petroleum crop. It would be done in open ponds or tanks. The petroleum would be piped off to a refinery and made into fuel that would work in gasoline engines. It would be a \"green\" fuel, carbon-neutral.
