Use of algae in field other than energy - as fertilizer, food, cattlefeed...

certainly this energy rich content of algal residue is a perfect source as feedstock for biogas production. This can be seen in Florida where a lake is cleaned by means of algal strains and the full content extracted from the lake is used as feedstock for a patented high load biogas system producing electricity and heat.

Oh well , and let's not forget that the deoiled algae extract can be used as organic fertilizer as well. The NPK values of algae after oil extraction is quite suitable for use as fertilizer. So that's another non-fuel use of algae!

Hi,
I have read about the methane production from the algae left over… Can anyone tell which is the best method? Gasification or Anaerobic digestion? What about the yield?

I also want to know the yield of methane by gasification as well as by anaerobic digestion..Is there any company trying out gasification of algal biomass for methane?

One company called A2BE Carbon Capture using a prototype system which will combine algae biodiesel production with ethanol from biomass including leftover algae biomass, using a gasification technology. The CO2 produced in gasification will be used to feed the algae production.

Refer this too…
Solar-Biofuels consortium is co-ordinating a range of research streams to analyse and optimize the use of micro algae for bio-methane production.

Here they are using a process called SunCHem to Produce Methane from Algae. According to them the yield is 0.26 g CH4/g algae (dry) (Carbon gasification: 93%)

What about algae to biopolymers and bioplastics? That appears to be another growth area?
