Non-Turbine Wind Generator

Non-Turbine Wind Generator

Postby Geo Energy » Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:40 am

From: Green Tech Gazette – June 23, 2008

An interesting article (with video) on a non-traditional form of Wind Energy: http://www.greentechgazette.com/index.p ... generator/

According to that article, instead of generating electricity using a turbine based on the traditional two- or three-blade design, the non-turbine wind generator is based upon the flutter of long strands of kite material spanning a gap and connected to button magnets on the ends that produce electrical current. The design was conceived to provide an inexpensive solution to micro-wind energy, but has the option to be scaled up to meet larger power generation needs...

I've seen this on a web page somewhere before and it's very interesting - I wonder what the output might be for a small enough unit as it sounds like it could be a bit weak depending on how the string vibrates. I've been wondering if the natural resonance of materials which has brought down bridges couldn't be leveraged with this same type of set up ? The string could be constrained in some way as to produce the resonance but it would need to be switched off or limited in some way once it got going.

Seems to me that the generator should be near the middle where the motion is greatest.

there is no way a generator will work without a turbine . its ridiculous .
see this link for details .
