  1. New World Record Achieved in Solar Cell Technology - New Solar Cell Breaks the “40 Percent Efficient” Sunlight-to-Electricity Barrier. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner today announced that with DOE funding, a concentrator solar cell produced by Boeing-Spectrolab has recently achieved a world-record conversion efficiency of 40.7 percent, establishing a new milestone in sunlight-to-electricity performance, says this Dec 2006 report from US Department of Energy
  2. Urban Ecology Topics – Energy Efficiency Innovation – this page from the Urban Ecology Australian site provides a good list of energy
  3. High Efficiency Solar Cell breakthrough - February, 2006 - In a scientific breakthrough, a team of South African scientists has developed a revolutionary new, highly efficient solar power technology that will enable homes to obtain all their electricity from the sun. The South African solar panels consist of a thin layer of a unique metal alloy that converts light into energy. The photo-responsive alloy can operate on virtually all flexible surfaces, which means it could in future find a host of other applications. Alberts said the new panels are approximately five microns thick, compared to older silicon panels which are 350 microns thick. Read more from IOL
  4. As Much Hot Water As Your Need Or The Sun In Trap - A unique solar collector was developed by specialists of the Moscow “ALTEN” company. The collector not only manages to entrap the heat of solar beams falling on its surface, but also to utilize it to a great extent for direct purpose – for water heating. To increase efficiency of absorption of solar energy and to reduce loss of heat, a special selective multi-layer coating based on titanium carbide is used. The coating allows to entrap solar energy in the visible and near infra-red spectral region where more than 90 percent of solar energy is concentrated. Read more from this Feb 2006 PhysOrg report
  5. Solar cell breakthrough: 40% efficiency achieved - Dec, 2006 - Researchers at Boeing-Spectrolab have just succeeded in building a multi-junction solar cell that achieves an incredible 40.7% efficiency - about twice that of the reigning champ in this space. Multi-junction cells are cells composed of several layers, with each slice capturing only a portion of the solar spectrum. More from this End Gadget blog entry

  1. Emerson Introduces Breakthrough Air-Conditioning Technology to Meet 2006 Federal Efficiency Standard - Business Wire, Feb 2005 - Emerson Climate Technologies introduced the next generation of its industry-leading Copeland Scroll(TM) compressors designed to more efficiently and quietly power residential and light-commercial central air conditioning systems. The new Copeland Scroll manufacturing platform includes a full product line of 1.5 to 5 horsepower compressors, available in R-410A and R-22 refrigerants, and motor voltages for both residential and light commercial applications. More info from this Find Articles report
  2. Accidental invention of white LEDs could light up the future - An accidental invention by a graduate student at Vanderbilt University, when he was trying to make quantum dots (Quantum dots are easily excited crystals generally just a few nanometers big & contain anywhere from 100 to 1,000 electrons), could lead to mass usage of LEDs for lighting, offering a cheaper, longer-lasting alternative to the traditional light bulb. When you shine a light on quantum dots or apply electricity to them, they react by producing their own light, normally a bright, vibrant color. But when Bowers shined a laser on his batch of dots, a white light appeared. The new device gives off a warm, yellowish-white light that shines twice as bright and lasts 50 times longer than the standard 60 watt light bulb. This work is published online in the Oct. 18 edition of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The Department of Energy estimates LED lighting could reduce U.S. energy consumption for lighting by 29 percent by 2025. Read full report from MSNBC report, Oct 2005
