Can methane be used instead of CO2?

I'm not a scientist, I'm an entrepreneur.  I have what is probably a simple question to most of you scientists in this field:

Could CO2 be replaced by methane in the production of algae, or would it be necessary (or just better) to use the methane to create power using diesel gen sets, then capture the CO2 emitted from the gen sets to feed to the algae?

I will appreciate any and all answers, and I'm sorry if this is too basic of a question to be posted here.
