UK researchers develop single step alkane production process from microalgae Posted by PatrickLeeds on Fri January 21 2011 12:54:34 PM 30

Researchers in Leeds, UK have recently published an article in Bioresource technology describing a technique on how to produce straight chain alkanes from microalgae in a single step. Their process involves pressure cooking the algae strains in hot compressed water at subcritical conditions using heterogeneous catalysts. Hydrothermal liquefaction is shown to convert the triglycerides to fatty
acids and alkanes in the presence of certain heterogeneous catalysts. The process requires no drying of the feedstock and produces a high quality oil.
