Growing algae and converting into gasoline and diesel !

Royal Dutch Shell, which is investigating about 10 second-generation biofuel technologies that would use nonfood raw materials, expects to narrow its research to about five options next year, its top scientist said.


"I am putting a lot of time and energy into sustainable biofuels, second-generation biofuels, in essence, the conversion of redundant material, straw, into ethanol, "Gerald Schotman, the Anglo-Dutch oil company's chief technology officer said on Wednesday.


 


"We're also playing with ideas on algae, growing algae and then converting algae directly into gasoline and diesel."


While ethanol has won praise for being a sustainable fuel, today it is largely made from corn and has also drawn criticism for diverting resources that could otherwise be used to feed people.


Shell's second-generation efforts could work around that problem by converting either agricultural byproducts or algae to liquid fuel, either ethanol or a diesel-like fuel.


The company aims to focus its efforts on about five developing technologies next year, Schotman said in an interview: "2011 is going to be the year of choices."


Schotman was in Cambridge, just outside Boston, to disclose that Shell had agreed to fund $25 million in Massachusetts Institute of Technology research projects focused on energy over the next five years.


He warned that it will be quite some time before biofuels and other renewable sources of energy, like wind and solar power, displace fossil fuels. By 2050, it's possible that the world will generate 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources, but that leaves 70 percent in traditional fossil fuels, he said.


"This is a long-distance horse race," he said of the development process.


The world estimated that it was going to take three laps, but it's going to take six or seven laps.

Algae production incubation programme - NAA

The National Algae Association is launching a new Algae Production Incubator Program for qualified algaepreneurs. The program begins on October 1, 2010 and is considered the first Algae Production Incubator starting in the U.S. More specifically, it will be a new algae farming cooperative.
For people and companies who are interested in developing algae for various markets including jet fuel, green diesel, biodiesel, biogasoline, bioplastics, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, organic fertilizer, and livestock, poultry and fish feed, then this program may be for you. It is aimed for entrepreneurs that have not been able to achieve funding through traditional means.
 San Diego  The city has successfully built an algal research hub, and today, has more than 30 algae companies in various stages based in the region. I?ll will be bringing you stories throughout the week about the companies we visit.

    Algae biodiesel plant . A new business model !!

    Green star products, builds , fabricates a biodiesl facilitiy comprising of 13 modules for a client in  West coast.
    They manufacture this and sell at no profits, but would take a share of the equity.
    A
    new model indeed. Neither the company's press release nor the news item
    that i read talked about Green products' client / client base for such 
    a new business model.

    Green
    Star Products, Inc., announced it has signed a contract to build a
    biodiesel facility. This is the first of several contracts in
    conjunction with an ambitious Algae-to-Biodiesel project on the west
    coast. Please see press release dated August 19, 2010, for further

    Green
    Star has already started fabrication of the 13 modules required for the
    processing of algae oil and other low cost available oils to produce
    biodiesel. The contract states that Green Star will build these modules
    at cost and will earn Green Star a future equity position and cash flows
    from the facility.

    This strategy has been a long term concept
    for Green Star which insures that the Company is not selling its
    proprietary technology but only builds facilities in which it shares in
    the ownership and cash flows. This also helps guarantee the security of
    its intellectual property.

    The algae to biodiesel plant will be
    rated initially at two million gallons per year with all necessary
    provisions incorporated so that the plant can easily be expanded to
    larger capacities in the future. The algae bioreactor system associated
    with this biodiesel plant is still under negotiation. Green Star will
    also participate in the engineering, fabrication and construction of the
    algae facility.

    Since this algae-to-biodiesel facility will be
    one of the largest of its kind ever built, it will not only be designed
    as a commercial facility but also serve as a giant research facility.
    Many other organizations will be involved, including universities and
    international research companies.

    Mr. Joseph LaStella, President
    of Green Star, stated: There are many technologies that will be
    incorporated into the facility including the MMB formula for algae
    growth, which has been verified by industry professionals in the past
    two years to increase algae growth 200% and more over a six day growth
    cycle. This algae growth booster formula has been successful in many
    types of algae strains including saltwater and freshwater species.See

    The United Nation's Economic Commission of Europe's project on Biomass trade is not new.


     


    What is new is the introduction of algae biomass production. Algae are one of the richest nutrient natural resources. They can be used to produce electricity, heat or biofuels such as biodiesel, biobutanol and biogasoline. In addition, algae have the capacity to absorb CO2 and to purify water (algae can be used as bioremediation of waste water and sewage). Finally, algae are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, for instance as a nutritional supplement. Due to this variety of uses across various economic sectors, algae biomass is considered as one of the most cost-efficient renewable energy sources. Algae can be produced almost anywhere, provided there is abundant water, light, carbon dioxide and minerals like phosphate.


     Algae, which are not yet produced in the Russian Federation, could thus offer a particularly attractive source of sustainable and renewable biomass as well as an important contribution to solving urgent environmental problems.


     


    The UNECE project will help to identify the best opportunities for algae biomass production as part of its work to introduce RBAPs. This latest development within the project will most likely increase the number of regions that can be involved and give a new impetus for regional governments to work on capacity building, cooperate with the private sector and make further investments in the development of the biomass sector.

    Nutritional value of Chlorella

    Chlorella, single-celled fresh water algae, is often referred to as a near-perfect food, as its range of health benefits is truly astounding. In this interview, Ginny Bank expounds on this phenomenal nutrient.


    Chlorella is perhaps most well known for its ability to detox your body by binding to toxins, such as mercury and carrying them out of your system.

    Nutritionally speaking, spirulina is another good source of complete protein. In fact, at 65-70 protein, it beats chlorella in terms of protein content. It also has higher amounts of B12, essential fatty acids, and the antioxidant superoxide dismutase.


    Chlorella, on the other hand, contains higher levels of chlorophyll, nucleotides RNA and DNA, and beta carotene.


    Ideally, it makes sense to take both, as one is not nutritionally superior than the other. Rather it?s the combination of both that can truly turn them into a nutritional powerhouse.
    Chlorella is a Potent Detox Agent


    Heavy metal toxicity, just like chemical toxicity, has become one of the most pressing health hazards of our day. Your body is assailed by chemicals and heavy metals on a daily basis, oftentimes from the most innocent-looking sources, from your everyday cookware to your dental fillings and the occasional seafood dinner.


    This is one area where chlorella can be of tremendous assistance as it?s a very potent detoxing agent for heavy metals. According to Ginny, it may even attract and expel certain pesticides.


    Chlorella plays a particularly crucial role in systemic mercury elimination, because the majority of mercury is rid through your stool. Once the mercury burden is lowered from your intestines, mercury from other body tissues will more readily migrate into your intestines -- where chlorella will work to remove it.


    Cilantro can also be used as a synergetic detoxification aid along with the chlorella and is particularly useful to take when you are consuming seafood, as most are invariably contaminated with heavy metals and chemicals for which the chlorella is well suited to help remove. Ideally you would need to take it with the meal so it binds directly to the toxins while they are in your gut, before they absorbed into your body.

    The key to chlorella?s detoxing abilities lies within the membrane of this single cell, but the cell wall of chlorella is actually indigestible to humans. This is why most chlorella products use the term ?broken cell wall,? to describe the fact that the chlorella has been rendered digestible.


    If a product does not specifically tell you that the cell wall has been broken, you are likely flushing your money down the toilet as the chlorella will simply pass right through you without doing you any good.

    Droug Frater Shelves Green Algae. But is optimistic of algafuel !

    Doug Frater, President and CEO of Global Green Solutions Inc. says that "Greensteam " literally moves full steam ahead, Global Green Solutions has been less successful with another clean-tech project it had in the pipeline:

    Green Algae.

    According to Frater, this project, involving an algae photobioreactor growing system that produces algae biomass from which oil can be extracted as a biofuels feedstock, was shelved "following the global financial market crisis resulting in a significant reduction in investor-based funding opportunities". Consequently, his company took the decision to focus solely on Greensteam.

    Nevertheless, Frater remains optimistic about the future of algae-based biofuels. "Algae-based technologies are probably the main candidates for producing biofuels feedstock for jet fuel applications due to the high yield, quality control and sustainability parameters they offer," he says.
