Genetically Engineering Algae To Produce Bioplastics 8

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a thermoplastic polyester which can be found naturally in the bacteria: Bacillus megaterium and Ralstonia eutropha. The genes encoding for this polymer were identified and transferred to the algae Phaeodactylum tricornutum. This resulted in the synthesis and eventually accumulation of the compound in the cytosolic granules of the algae. When the researchers studied the algal biomass, the compound was found to constitute nearly 10 percent of the dry weight.
