Biodiesel from algae may be the solution for energy provided water requirement is reasonable and not 4 cubm per sqm surface area in raceway pond. Any solution? Do not say waste water as the same is not available in areas away from cities in India. Power/cement plants are away from cities. - 10 years ago

City - Kolkata Country - India Role - Just interested About - I am thinking to go ahead to start a pilot project on algal biodiesel. However, I find a big problem and that is water requirement of algae while growing in raceway pond. Somewhere I read water requirement is 4 cubm/sqm of water surface. It is huge water. If 80000 sqm of pond surface area is used as raceway pond then daily water requirement is 900,000 liter. This much water may be obtained from underground source. Waste water can be used, but waste water can be available in big cities in India. CO2 can be available from power and cement plants, which are away from cities/towns due to environment reasons. How to compromise this problem? We have to see it as a composite problem. Please suggest. |
