Topic of the week

  • Closed Pond for Algae Growth

Grazing is one of the main issues that restrict algal biomass growth in open ponds. Can closed ponds be used successfully for algae cultivation? What are the major problems that might have to be dealt with to make this possible?

while harvesting, can there be any chance of getting infected severly due to any other foreign materials present inside the dense mass?

Grazers need energy. Lots of it. If you ever seen them under a microscope... They need this energy to move around to search for a fat algae and to multiply.

That is where your oils go to. Your grazer community will rise exponentially while your oil content incl algae are declining exponentially.

Good luck harvesting those grazers :P

    Just my 2 cents

    Greetings,
The graziers die off - and !!! they have just inavertable harvested your algae for you !!!
Always remember that when a accumulator consumes algae - were does the oil/fat go??
They accumulate it and then you harvest them !!

I have heard that graziers quickly die off..................after they eat all of your algae.

I just had another picture flash in my head. It will be quite a site to see a paddle wheel operate in 0 degrees. Can you say "ice wheel"!

I think that Larsyn pretty well drives a stake through the heart of the ditch system in his post of 4 days ago. Not only will it get hot as hell under a plastic cover in the summer but what are you going to do about oxygen removal? In the winter time the surface will freeze 2 or more inches and if the days are cloudy you could get 6" or more of ice. Then how about a couple feet of snow on top of everything. Not real productive and lots of head aches.

    Alan confesses Dear FOA,

It occurs to me that I have been designing open ponds all along.
Our pond is 60' wide 20' deep and 124' long. The top of the sides are only about 2 feet out of the ground. We do cover this open pond with an economical hoop and canvas building and provide positive air pressure with steril air so it will leak to the outside.

Sorry about this, I guess I have been one of "them" all along!

I better go watch some TV, I've been thinking again.

    Greetings
There are lots of other land that is not in such extreme temperature variation actually probably more usable land than deserts - but the desert are getting bigger

    Greetings
Can anybody supply me with a reason why grazers are Bad ??
I would like much rather to harvest a grazer than algae – grazer are generally larger that the majority of micro algae, and if the grazers eat algae then the grazers become accumulators. We get the oil/fat one way or the other !!!!

Dang it - I missed the first part of the first sentence before responding. Carry on.

Anybody who has any experience at all with growing algae I
    think will agree with the
generality that graziers will come and graze. No matter where the algae is, the graziers will
    find it.

"What are the major problems that might have to be dealt with to make this possible?"

Consider that secondary major and minor problems can arise from said method. I can think of a few; costly transport and lawful disposal fees for hazardous materials, is one.

As I've said, I do not use solvents, but others are up in the air about it, which amazes me for several reasons.

A closed pond has no temperature control. Placed on cheap desert land the enclosed structure would be subject to temperatures of 110 degrees plus 20-50 degrees additional temperature from the enclosure. The desert is also subject to freezing temperatures.Any savings realized by enclosing would have to be spent on climate control. They are still also subject to day length. Where a PBR can use controled light for production.
