IKEA\u2019s\u00a0external future-living lab \u2014 has erected the \u2018algae dome\u2019, a four-meter-high\u00a0pavilion\u00a0capable of growing what could be \u2018the supercrop of the future\u2019.\u00a0Designed by architects,\u00a0the\u00a0food-producing structure\u00a0houses a photo-bioreactor, a closed system that enables the high productivity of microalgae, microscopic algae that are typically found in freshwater and marine systems.\"\"<\/p>\n

It is imagined that in the future, different species of microalgae could be used for a variety of purposes:\u00a0as a form of nutrient-rich food; as a replacement for soy protein in animal feed; in the development of biofuels; as a way to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere; and as a method of treating industrial wastewater.<\/p>\n
