Evaluating algae under laboratory conditions may not always suit best under outdoor pond conditions.<\/p>\n<p>To make that process simple, scientists at PNNL are working on a project Algae DISCOVR &#8211; Development of Integrated Screening, Cultivar Optimization and Validation Research. The project aims to minimize the time and cost needed to move promising algal strains from the laboratory and into production.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6149 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PNNL-150x150.png\" alt=\"PNNL\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PNNL-150x150.png 150w, http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/PNNL-45x45.png 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the new experiment, dozens of glass cylinders containing algal species are exposed to hundreds of multi-coloured tiny LEDs. These LEDs brighten and dim, mimicking the outdoors\u2019 constantly changing climatic conditions.
