They identified a mutation in the green alga Chlamydomonas which substantially removes a constraint <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5239 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/algaloil-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"algaloil\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/algaloil-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/algaloil-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>that is widely observed in micro-algae where the highest yields of oil can only be obtained from starving cultures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">They found that there was a connection between acetate and the growth behavior of vip1-1 cells<br \/>\nthat led Umen and his team to investigate the mutant further to see if it had other metabolic alterations that could be detected without perturbing TOR signaling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Remarkably, they found that actively growing vip1 cells were oil overaccumulators that made extra storage oil compared to normal cells, and did so without incurring a significant growth penalty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biomassmagazine.com\/articles\/13853\/new-discovery-offers-potential-for-algae-biofuel-production\" target=\"_blank\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists from US have discovered a way to make algae better oil producers without sacrificing growth.
