There are two different systems of algae-based wastewater treatment. They are Waste Stabilization Pond Systems (WSPs) and High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP), both of which are secondary treatment methods.<\/p>\n<p>In the first type, wastewater treatment is achieved by mutualistic growth of microalgae and heterotrophic bacteria. The second type, High Rate Algal Ponds (HRAP) is a combination of intensified oxidation ponds and an algal reactor. They are shallow, paddlewheel-mixed open raceway ponds and provide far more efficient wastewater treatment. For optimal growth of algae, adequate amounts of nutrients should be supplied.<\/p>\n<p>It is recom<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5199\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/oilgae_wastewater-150x150.gif\" alt=\"oilgae_wastewater\" width=\"141\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/oilgae_wastewater-150x150.gif 150w, http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/oilgae_wastewater-45x45.gif 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/>mended to use those strains of algae which reduce the cost of harvesting during various stages of treatment.
