Eventhough photobioreactor is a costlier technology, (with average cost of about $18), it owns several advantages over the conventional system. PBRs has higher efficiency and oil yielding potential, and provides high control over harsh environments.

More than 100 companies including Algenol, Sapphire Energy, Heliae, Solazyme, etc. are pursuing the production of fuels from algae. The global biodiesel industry is projected to grow and touch around 14.4 billion gallons by 2015 from 5 billion gallons in 2009.

Preview Algae Fuels Report – Processes, Technologies, Trends and Challenges

Algae represent the third generation feedstock for biodiesel with much higher yields than second generation crops.
