Used by wastewater treatment plants to get rid of ammonia, nitrates and phosphates, algae have long been a cost-effective way to keep systems running smoothly. This prompted researchers to look into using algae as a source of fuel, replacing diesel fuel by a whopping 50%. The researchers are using Scenedesmus (single-cell algae) to isolate and extract lipids, which in turn makes biodiesel. To date, the group has created 100 gallons of algae, a number they hope to increase tenfold by spring.

http://solar.calfinder.com/blog/solar-information/algae-biofuel-the-future/

Researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology have found a novel way to produce biodiesel, one that doesn’t require massive amounts of equipment or labor to harvest.
