The proposed plant in Hoover would  be smaller than the Oahu plant, the Ohau plant in Hawaii was apparently constructed over 40 acres .<\/p>\n<p>SERAC would run the $9 million facility for five years, with hopes that  the algae oil plant could be commercially acquired and expanded to a  large volume operation capable of replacing petroleum-based oil with  algae-generated oil products.<\/p>\n<p>Hoover began using alternative fuels in its municipal fleet six years  ago, with 196 cars using ethanol and 161 cars and trucks powered by  biodiesel. The city also recycles cooking oil, which has yielded  biodiesel fuel and prevented 32,000 gallons of cooking oil from being  dumped in the county&#8217;s landfills.
