The money comes through the National Bioproducts Programme, with additional resources of around C$1.2million being provided by both monetary and in-kind contributions from industrial and organisational partners. Plans have already been drawn up to build a 50,000litre cultivation pilot plant at a Ketch Harbour facility.

The project involves several industry partners including the international consortium Carbon2Algae Solutions; POS Pilot Plant from Saskatoon; Ocean Nutrition Canada from Halifax; and Menova Energy Inc of Markham, Ontario. Carbon2Algae hopes to operate algae photobioreactors to capture CO2 from facilities such as the Alberta Oil Sands or coal-fired power plants – the emissions would then be used to allow the algae to thrive.

Researchers believe it is best to find a biofuel producing species and to develop small pilot plants. Algae has been grown at the Marine Research Station in Ketch Harbour for more than 50 years with 64 species having been collected and studied as part of the algal biofuels project.

See also:

Small algae with great potential

The Canadian government has awarded approximately C$5million to a project to produce fuels on a large scale from algae grown in Nova Scotia.
