{"id":1269,"date":"2009-11-19T03:47:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-19T03:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oilgae.com\/blog\/?p=1269"},"modified":"2015-01-13T11:53:10","modified_gmt":"2015-01-13T11:53:10","slug":"growing-algae-in-acre-sized-platforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/growing-algae-in-acre-sized-platforms.html","title":{"rendered":"Growing Algae in Acre-sized Platforms in Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You are at: <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/\">Oilgae Blog<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas State University engineer Wenquiao Yuan and his colleague think that growing algae on floating, acre-sized platforms in the ocean could dramatically reduce expenses associated with algae oil production by providing free sources of sunlight, nutrients, controlled temperature and water.<\/p>\n<p>Unless the platform can grow algae several millimeters thick, it would be too difficult to scrape off the biomass for processing into oil.<\/p>\n<p>The algae have responded well to dimpled stainless-steel. But the engineers are not sure why algae grow differently, depending on the type of material and surface texture.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding those &#8220;mechanisms of attachment&#8221; is the goal of the first portion of the research, which is funded by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
