{"id":1172,"date":"2009-08-18T04:49:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-18T04:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oilgae.com\/blog\/?p=1172"},"modified":"2009-08-18T04:49:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-18T04:49:00","slug":"benemann-calls-livefuels-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/benemann-calls-livefuels-approach.html","title":{"rendered":"Benemann Calls LiveFuels &#8216;Biofuel-from-Fish&#8217; Approach Possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You are at: <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oilgae.com\/blog\/\">Oilgae Blog<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Benemann, one of the authors of a seminal U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory report from 1998 on biofuel from algae and an internationally-recognized bioenergy expert said he thinks LiveFuels is \u201cin as good of shape as anybody\u201d to make its R&amp;D happen.<\/p>\n<p>Morgenthaler-Jones said LiveFuels has been taking a different direction since 2006, growing the algae in what the company said is low-cost, saltwater ponds, feeding the algae to tiny, filter-feeding fish and other aquatic herbivores and then processing them for renewable oils and other valuable products such as omega-3 fatty acids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The oil would then be \u201chanded off to the petroleum guys,\u201d Morgenthaler-Jones said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFish need 1\/800th of the energy of a centrifuge to process algal water,\u201d she said, adding that as a bonus, the fish do the lipid conversion themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, Morgenthaler-Jones said the company is looking to achieve 5,000 pounds of fish per acre, eventually getting to an intermediate stage of 25,000 pounds per acre.
